If you’re the kind of traveller who likes to see places a little differently – you know, dust on the tyres, bush out the window, and no rush to be anywhere - then The Bridle Track might be right up your alley.
Just 30 minutes from Bathurst, this iconic track is a favourite with locals and visitors looking for adventurous things to do in Bathurst. Winding its way alongside the Macquarie River, it offers rugged bushland, wide-open views, and that sense of stepping back in time that Bathurst is known for.
A track with a bit of history
The Bridle Track dates back to the 1800s, originally established as a trade route between Bathurst and Hill End during the gold rush days. Its name comes from the narrow sections where hopeful miners had to lead their horses by, you guessed it, the bridle.
Over time, the track evolved into the route you see today, following the Macquarie River and carving its way through some of the region’s most striking bushland. As you travel along it now, you may even spot remnants of old gold-mining equipment tucked quietly into the landscape - small reminders of the people who once passed through chasing their luck.
More than just four wheels
While it’s best known as a Bathurst 4WD track, The BridleTrack isn’t just for vehicles with big tyres. It’s also popular with cyclists, hikers and even horse riders, making it a great option if you’re looking for outdoor activities near Bathurst.
Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes and check track conditions before heading out. Weather can play a big part, and access may change after heavy rain. A quick weather condition check before you go will help avoid any surprises.
How we’d spend the day
Start the morning tackling the track in your 4WD, weaving your way through narrow sections, river crossings, and long stretches of bush that feel a world away from town, bound to give you that rush of adventure. It’s the kind of driving that keeps you switched on, but still lets you slow down and enjoy the scenery as you go.
As lunch time approaches, there’s no shortage of spots to pull over and soak it all in. Set yourself up riverside, fire up a barbecue, or simply unpack lunch and enjoy it with the sound of the water and birds nearby.
The afternoon is best spent slowing things right down. Drop a line in the river (fingers crossed for a catch), wander along the banks, or sit back and enjoy the quiet. This is the part of the day where you stop checking the time and start appreciating where you are.
To wrap things up, stop in at the Hill End Micro Pub for a well-deserved drink, then cruise back into Bathurst as the sun dips low and the sky puts on a proper show. After that, it’s all about winding down with a hot shower and a comfy bed.
