Gold discovery tours
Gold Tour G1 - 2 hours
Visit our indoor museum to see first hand the various methods of mining, from man power through horse to steam power. Discover the difference between fools gold, leaf, alluvial and reef gold. There is a life sized replica of the Holterman nugget.
See our extensive display of general household items that were used in a Victorian home There is a display of real gold and you will learn about the uses of gold.
The outdoor museum has working exhibits of large horse drawn machines that were common. These include the Californian bucket pump, whim and poppet head. Experience underground as you walk into the adit to see the structure that holds the shaft secure. In the steam shed the authentic wood fired boiler produces steam required to operate the skip delivering ore, then the five head stamper battery for crushing ore. The steam whistle is sounded as a warning that all is clear.
No visit to the Bathurst Goldfields would be complete without time in the black smith shop. The guide transforms a piece of steel rod into a useful fire poker.
Gold Tour and Gold Panning
G2 - 2.5 hours
As for Gold Tour above as well as time panning. Panning is done at the ponds beginning with a pan full of gravel. Effort and patience is required to wash this down leaving fine sand where the real gold is hidden. As the gold is separated from the sand care is required to remove it from the pan and place it safely into the bottle for storage and taken home.,
